Learn to Row Assistant Coach

The George Pocock Rowing Foundation is seeking a Learn to Row Assistant Coach for the Spring 2025 season of its Pocock Youth Rowing Program.

Pay Range: $22 - $24 / hour

Location of Programming: Pocock Rowing Center, Seattle WA

Start date: March 12, 2025

Season Dates: March 12- April 25, 2025

Coaching Schedule:  

Monday thru Thursday 4:15-6:45pm, Saturday 8:45-11:15am

PYR seeks to model an intentionally welcoming, positive Learn to Row (LTR) experience for first-time youth athletes. We believe that this experience is foundational to increasing access and belonging for both the sport and our team.  

This position is ideal for candidates who want to create an inspirational first experience with rowing that provides athletes with a sense of belonging in the boathouse, excitement for future rowing opportunities, and foundational skills necessary for the next step. 

This candidate believes in rowing as a tool for building life skills and creating opportunities for learning. They are excited about introducing young people to the sport and sharing their unique rowing story and lessons learned with others. They are invested in making rowing more accessible and inclusive for people of color and those facing socio-economic barriers to participation.

About this Role

The LTR Assistant coach is responsible for the instruction and safety supervision of the Learn to Row athletes. This Assistant Coach fosters an active learning environment where athletes can try without fear of failure and support one another’s unique identities, learning and successes. 

The LTR Assistant Coach must be an enthusiastic team player who can run safe, engaging daily practices in line with the LTR curriculum. They will work collaboratively with the LTR Lead Coach to balance meeting the needs of their athletes while providing a consistent participant experience. 

Specific Role Responsibilities: Learn to Row Assistant Coach

  • Execute the PYR Learn to Row curriculum, including icebreakers, land instruction and on-water rowing. 

  • Instructs, demonstrates, and reinforces beginning rowing skill sets and safety procedures both on and off the water. This is conducted primarily in sculling boats.

  • Develop athletes within the context of the youth program’s long-term athlete development model.

  • Help connect athletes with opportunities to continue rowing at PYR and scholarship opportunities at the GPRF.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Adhere to plans for session logistics of equipment and space to ensure a smoothly run and consistent Learn to Row experience for all involved.

  • Support the Program Registrar in collection of required registration forms and athlete participation surveys.  Document attendance and communicate irregularities to the Program Registrar.

  • Support the Head Coach and Program Registrar’s team communications to athletes and parents regarding schedules and general questions.

  • Work with the Lead Coach to address in-person or electronic communications about specific athlete needs.

  • Capture opportunities to welcome parents and families to the PYR program.  

  • Abide by policies laid out in the Pocock Youth Rowing Coaching Manual, GPRF Operations Manual, GPRF Athlete Protection Policy and GPRF Employee Guide 

  • Attend team practices and staff meetings as scheduled with the supervisor.

  • Communicate with your team, fellow staff, and supervisor on a regular basis about items relating to safety, athlete development, facility and equipment use and other pertinent topics. 

Environmental Responsibilities

  • Ensures a safe environment for all athletes and staff, and adheres to safety policies of the Pocock Rowing Center. 

  • Cultivate a culture of belonging for all PYR athletes, parents and staff.

  • Enforce team standards for maintaining the cleanliness of the facility and condition of the equipment. 

  • Model culturally responsive coaching practices learned through either lived experience or training and education in order to work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds

REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Prior rowing experience, particularly in sculling

  • Preferably previous coaching experience, ideally with youth athletes

  • Ability to communicate professionally and effectively with youth and adults

  • Strong time management skills 

  • Candidates must satisfactorily complete a criminal background check 

  • USRowing Level 1 or Level 2 certification

  • WA State Boaters License

U19 Assistant Coach

The GPRF is seeking a High School Assistant Coach for the Spring 2025 season for its experienced Under-19 Pocock Youth Rowing Program.

Pay Range: $24 - $29 / hour

Location of Programming: Pocock Rowing Center, Seattle WA

Start date: February 25th, 2025

Mandatory Curriculum Training Dates: February 25, 2025

Season Dates: Spring: February 26 - May 19

Coaching Schedule:

U19 practices: Mondays - Fridays 4:00-6:45pm & Saturdays 8:30-11:15am

The U19 Assistant Coach fosters an active learning environment where athletes are appropriately challenged in pursuit of their development and performance goals. The U19 Assistant Coach understands and can communicate the importance of athletes working in a team-first mindset when working in a competitive environment.

This position is ideal for candidates who want to have a big impact by creating an inspirational team experience in rowing that provides athletes with a sense of belonging in the boathouse, motivation for building an inclusive and competitive team culture, and necessary skills to advance their rowing careers.

  • Support athletes as they learn how to advance their skills as student-athletes, including helping teach skills in time management, communication, physical recovery, and conflict management.

  • Provide opportunities for athletes to experience a healthy competitive environment.

  • Collaborate with the U19 coaching staff to build and develop racing crews using evaluation tools such as fitness testing, technical evaluation, and on-water race pieces.

  • Assist in race day planning and management for U19 scrimmages and regattas.

  • Develop athletes within the context of the youth program’s long-term athlete development model.

  • Help connect athletes with opportunities to continue rowing at PYR and scholarship opportunities at the GPRF.
